I worked with a very special and dedicated student over the summer. She needed help preparing for the English grammar and usage portion of a professional exam. Although she had tried to pass the exam several times–always coming close–she had not achieved a passing score. We worked together for over a month, and she passed the exam.
The success of a tutoring program in English (or any other subject) depends upon what the student does in the time he or she is not tutoring. I have never had a more dedicated student than this person. She was destined for success because she was unafraid to work hard and do extra practice questions in the time between sessions.
I also was very fortunate to help tutor several groups of students in Tampa who were preparing for the English portion of the SAT. We met once a week and did a practice writing and some of the sentence completion or sentence correction exercises to help boost their SAT English scores.
The students in the group that excelled were those unafraid to do a little bit more work than the required amount between English tutoring sessions.
