I got some great news the other day. One of my students worked extremely hard preparing for the PSAT. When he got his scores, we thought that he had missed the cutoff by one point based on the projected cutoff given shortly after the test.
However, he heard that he made it and can at least make a run for semi-finalist and finalist!
I’m so proud of him for the time that he invested to make dramatic gains in the vocabulary section of the PSAT reading and in each kind of question in the writing sections of the PSAT! It was not an easy climb.

A student that I worked with on the reading and writing portions of the PSAT has become a semi finalist in the race for a National Merit Scholarship.
How cool is that?
He started out brilliant and out-worked the competition. I wish him the very best of luck and pray that he becomes a National Merit Scholar.
On the same day that I got some bad news, this bit of good news really gave me a lift.

One of my favorite web services is Stumble Upon. In my spare time, I like to see what new things that I can find on the web in my areas of interest.
A few days ago, I stumbled upon a good flashcard site for students studying for the SAT and ACT.
Although the sets are of varying quality, I found a few good ones, especially in the area of word roots.
If you are doing some last minute cramming for the vocabulary parts of the SAT and ACT, you might find it useful. It looks like you can study the cards on the site for free.
Let me know what you think!

I was tutoring a student in Cheval in North Tampa yesterday. He’s a great kid with some very cool toys.
I’ve always been a PC, but I really liked using his Apple i-Pad.
We were working together on a writing assignment that required a little research, and I used the i-Pad to browse the web.
Nice. Fast. A lot easier to tote than a laptop.
Having one would also be very useful to look up ISBNs when I’m treasure hunting in used bookstores.
Of course, an i-Pad would be cool to use when I’m tutoring SAT or ACT.
