All school year, I have been working with one of my favorite students to improve her writing. Today she shared some exciting news. She earned a perfect 6 on her FCAT Writes, and she received an award from her school as the top student on her team.

She always does more writing than I assign, so I’m not surprised that she earned the top score on her FCAT Writes. Today was our last session until August, so I have an opening to take a new writing student this summer.

The Tampa English Tutor has expanded his horizons just a little. Most of my students have been in high school, but a local tutoring company hired me to help an 8th grader prepare for the English portion of the FCAT.
By no means an FCAT expert at the outset, I was fortunate that my wife teaches 6th graders and was able to get me a slew of resources to help this student get a handle on the key skills for the FCAT. (of course, I still want more quality FCAT materials and resources…)
So far this student has been a joy to work with. We end up doing a mixture of FCAT exercises and homework help, and he is blessed to have two wonderfully involved parents who do all the right things to help him achieve.
As accustomed as I am to doing several hours of tutoring at a time with older students, I have had to remind myself that prolonged tutoring just does not work for younger students. We end up working for an hour and mixing up the tutoring activities so that we stay focused and fresh.
For those tutors and educators with extensive FCAT expertise, I would love some advice on which resources are the best for teaching the skills needed to score well on the FCAT. Please feel free to email me using the address on the Tampa Tutoring blog with any great FCAT test resources for 8th graders.
