Tampa English Tutor Finds Tips for Unlocking Creativity

Posted on 10th December 2010 in Tampa Language Arts tutors

As someone who has moments when the writing just won’t flow, I especially like tips and tricks for beating writer’s block and letting the words flow.

If you’re a writer motivated only by an impending deadlines, you ought to devote a minute or two to this list.

I was using Stumble Upon when I found 201 Ways to Arouse Your Creativity by Katie Tallow of Momentum Gathering.

Time certainly goes quickly.

Yesterday, I found out that one of the students who I tutor in writing is graduating from USF.

I wish her well as she enters a tough job market.

Tampa EnglishTutoring student gets teaching certificate

Posted on 18th November 2010 in English Tutor Success Stories

One of the great joys of this tutoring is seeing students reach goals.

One of my students set a goal to get her Florida teaching certificate and become a high school language arts teacher.

(Proof that some people are better at body art than punctuation.)

She is on her way toward achieving that goal.

Tonight I helped her create a professional looking resume and cover letter. OK, my wife did most of the work. I did some revisions and the Frau formatted the resume so that it shines.

I wish my student the very best of luck in finding a permanent teaching position.

Open Letter to My Fellow Curmudgeons

Posted on 25th October 2010 in Essay Writing & Help

To those curmudgeons who believe that the youth of today are shallow slackers, I say not so fast old timer.

Things are much better than you think, even though I doubt those kids will stop riding their bikes over that section of grass near your driveway.

Although I mostly tutor reading, writing, and the reading and English portions of the SAT and ACT, I occasionally get asked by nervous parents to review the personal statements and college admission essays of tutoring clients.

If you don’t have a college-age kid, you might not know, but it’s time for seniors to be submitting their college applications.

I’ve been helping a few students contemplate how one of their meaningful experiences can be transformed into a “concise narrative” for the University of Florida and aiding others in grasping how they exemplify the virtues enshrined in FSU’s three-part motto.

My fellow curmudgeons, there is reason for hope for the generation coming of age right now.

I have done my share of worrying about the world they are going into, but reading a few of their college application essays has made me optimistic about their chances of being successful.Open Apple iPad with earphones

One of my students has been part of ground-breaking research in the heath sciences. Another overcame a fear of speaking by becoming president of the speech and debate team. A third lost a relative to cancer and became a leading money-raiser for Relay for Life.

Let not your hearts be troubled.

I like tutoring ACT English and ACT Reading.

Students who are good in science should consider taking the ACT because it has a science section. Check out my post on SAT versus ACT if you are trying to decide which test to take.

I’ve been working with one student to improve his ACT scores since this summer and he is making good progress.

He likes the test because he says the vocabulary is not as difficult as the SAT and because there is not a guessing penalty on the ACT.

If you are taking the ACT and need some help with the English or reading sections, please give me a call at 813.787.8959.

I tutor students in Wesley Chapel, New Tampa, Odessa, Temple Terrace, and the surrounding areas. Reach me at Tampa Tutor at Tampa bay dot rr dot com.
